I. Mark Driscoll (p. 3), "You aren't what's been done to you, but what Jesus has done for you. What you do does not determine who you are, rather who you are in Christ (ought to) determine what you do."
II. Idolatry? = Identity Crisis; Ex. 20:3, "Thou shalt have no other gods before Me" Why is idolatry wrong (bad for you)? A fundamental problem is that people define ourselves by any number of things besides Jesus;
I.D.O.L.S (Rom 1:25, "served the creation, rather than the Creator)
- Items: You define yourself off what you own/have vs. what "they" have
Gal. 6:4-6, "Do not compare yourself to others"
Lk 12:15, "Life does not consist of the abundance of your possessions"
- Duties: You seek to excel in order to feel "superior" to others. The truth is, "You are not what you do." (This also backfires when you fail.)
Col 3:23, "Do your work unto the Lord, not unto men/women"
- Others: People-pleasing and codependency leads to smothering, neediness, and emotional instability (easily inflated, deflated, or crushed)
Gal 1:10. "Am I trying to please people or please God?"
John 4:4-26, "I am Living Water" (not your husband, friend, etc)
- Longings: Placing your hope in a future "fix," rather than what exists now
Matthew 6:34, "Do not worry about tomorrow."
Ecc 6:9, "Enjoy what you have today, rather than wishing for tomorrow
- Sufferings: Living with a victim mentality; being defined by what happened to you in the past (guilt, remorse, regret)
Luke 9:23, "Take up your cross and follow Me"
1 Thess. 5:18, "Give thanks in all circumstances, for this is God's will"
III. Who you are determines what you do. (and what you don't do)
a. Identity determines values, and values define behavior (good vs. bad)
b. Some Christian values: 1. Faith in God; 2. Respect; 3. Honesty; 4. Self-control/Moderation; 5. Kindness/Compassion; 6. Contentment and Thankfulness; 7. Patience/Perseverance; 8. Peace and Humility; etc etc
- Who you are determines what you think. (and what you don't)
a. Positive and Negative thinking/perspective comes back to identity
b. Christ Disciple? Phil 4:4-7, "Rejoice always; Think on these things"
IV. Who are you? A follower of Jesus? If so, why should/does it matter?
