I. Your Ultimate Concerns Shape Your Identity, Your Identity Shapes Your Life
- Rom 10:9, "If you confess Jesus as your Lord, ... then you will be saved"
a. Jesus is "Lord of", you are "saved from" what?" = Internal + External Death
b. John 15:5, "I am the Vine... Apart from me, your life is a dead branch"
c. In Christ, identity changes because "connection to Vine" = new life/creation
- Daily Starting Point? Who you are, Eph 1:1-14, YOU are in Christ; Jesus as Lord
II. Hannah's testimony (p. 138-139), "I saw that I was a wretched sinner... but I forgot the Good News that all my sin went to Jesus as my substitute because I deserved that death; but He paid my penalty, then gifted me His righteousness."
a. The World's View? Everyone believes something is wrong... "we" need to fix it
1. Good enough, and do nothing; only those "bad people" need to change
2. They are good enough, but they need to save the rest of us
3. They are not good enough, so need to change themselves (new age)
4. No one is good; everyone needs to act better (other world religions)
b. Christianity - something is wrong, and we (humanity) cannot fix it (Phil. 3:5-9)
c. 2 Cor 5:17-21; External Work of Christ Yields an Internal Transformation
III. You are a "New Creation" = 9 Marks of being "reborn" in Christ
1. New Birth - John 3:1-21, "Nicodemus, God desires a NEW YOU, not self-improvement"; A new "family," a new "Father," a new identity...
2. New Lord - Ex. 20:3-5, "No other gods..." I.D.O.L.S set aside/rejected
3. New Heart - Ez. 36:24-29, "I will remove your heart of stone, and give you a heart of flesh" (Open; Soft; Moldable; Flexible; Humble; Repentant, etc)
4. New Mind - Rom 12:2, "Transformation comes by the renewal of your mind"; A new way of thinking about life; a new lens, new perspective, new worldview, etc
5. New Love - A. WHO you love (Do you love Me? Jesus asks) + B. HOW you love (1 Cor 13, "Love is patient, kind, never irritable, holds no record of wrongs...
6. New Desires - Mt. 6:33, "Seek the kingdom of God and His righteousness"
- your heart is bent towards good and repelled by evil (want nothing to do w/it)
7. New Community - Unattracted to ungodly people, instead desire Christians
8. New Power - Phil 4:13, "I can do all things through Him who strengthens me"
9. New Freedom - John 8:31 "The Truth will set you free"; True Freedom is found
in God's Rules, not rebelling against them. You want to know and keep them.
IV. Application? Given 9 markers, where are you a new Creation in Jesus Christ? Where are you affirmed? Where do you need to grow?
