I. Your Ultimate Concerns Shape Your Identity, Your Identity Shapes Your Life

- You are strongest/healthiest, when you focus on your center (not boundaries)

- Rom 10:9, "If you confess Jesus as your Lord, ... then you will be saved"

a. Jesus is "Lord of what?" We are Saved from what? I.D.O.L.S.(p. 7-14)

- Daily Starting Point? Who you are, Eph 1:1-14, YOU are in Christ; Jesus as Lord

II. BIll's Testimony (p. 66-67), "Bill's desire to make God proud of him ended up pushing him to do all the right things for the wrong reasons. Looking back, he realized his motives were to impress God, not serve (or love) Him."

- Problem with Grace? We don't believe it, because WE (humans) aren't gracious

III. Eph 2:8 - "It is by grace you have been saved through faith, and this is not of yourselves or your good works, but it is the gift of God."

- The world? Embraces Judgmentalism and works-righteousness

a. (p. 76) - Man-Made Religion = Works-Based Religion

Vs. b. God-Jesus Made Religion = Grace-Based, unmerited, undeserved love

3 Stages of Salvation Grace: God's Love at Work

1. Prevenient Grace (preventative): Romans 1:20; Eph 2:1-5

- (1) keep you away from things that will harm your soul; and, (2) guide you into wholesome, healthy/holy things that will keep your soul well

- 5 ways we can see prevenient grace at work:

1. Conscience (you feel bad about sin);

2. Void in your heart (only God can fill);

3. Still small voice within that testifies to God's reality (Newborn child, Mountaintop View, etc);

4. We hear God through other people;

5. The Testimony of the Church draws us to God

2. Justifying Grace: Rom 3:23-25; Eph 2:5-9

1. All have sinned/fallen short; but Sin-debt is PAID in full by Jesus (atonement)

3. Sanctifying Grace: Eph 2:10; Matthew 5:48, "you are to be perfect..."

1. Perfection is not the idea that you have no flaws (that is Latin model), rather:

- Dynamic Process (from Greek model) – perfecting perfection

a. Not Included:

knowledge;

mistakes;

bodily weakness;

temptation

b. 3 realities that are included in this Salvation

1. freedom from separation from God (or sin)

2. freedom from evil tempers and thoughts

3. we can have a heart that is no longer bent towards evil

Application? What are you being saved from today? How important is it for you to continue walking daily with Jesus to "perfect" your salvation (sanctifying grace)?
